Digital art practice - week 27

This week I wanted to analyse my final piece for the perspective project.

Overall, it catches a sci-fi scene, using motif within it and making the genre easily identifiable. Including things like hard surface and space elements.

In the end, I decided to add more clouds to the scene so the background was visible, but it didn't draw the eye to that specific section.

It brings up a believable scene, of a future civilisation that abandoned this planet due to the present circumstances. Our character is analysing remnants before the inevitable collapse.

As a narrative standpoint, it is very strong.

As for colour, I believe the colour scheme works, however some of the colours are a bit washed out, the reasoning for this I am not too sure, but I have a few theories. Such as the value not being that close together or the area of contrast being too light. But the colour does indicate to us what objects are which.

Project Post-mortem (Future tribe)

Area of success:

Overall, this project has been challenging, but I believe that my character overall encapsulated the idea of a post-apocalyptic scenario.

The idea of scavenging parts from across the wasteland to adapt yourself to be the stronger person.

The colour schemes I came up with have defiantly excelled compared to cube world. This is because I actually implemented the colour schemes on to the character rather than overlaying it on the model to 'give a sense' of colour.

Area of improvement:

I know one of my areas of improvement is to research anatomy and methods. Even though the final outcome resembles a character, functionality of clothing and wrapping round edges, contouring and folds are harder to see. Meaning I would need to research the practicality of the elements that go into making a character.

Future reference:

In the future, when it comes to the character design, I want to invest my time into doing more research toward assets to accompany the character. Whether it is weapons, appropriate clothing items etc.

This way I can adapt the designs I come across and iterate, possibly combining each of the items together in some form or another

Digital art practice - week 26

This week, I experimented with various colour schemes.

Initially, I wanted to go with a realistic colour scheme that would reflect this in a real world location/story.

However, I went back to add colour to see what worked. Most of the colours I made didn't work particularly well as it didn't go with the hard surface elements within the scene. However, I decided to put a few aspects of different colours into one which ended up working quite nicely overall.

Digital art practice - week 25

This week, I wanted to work on the value iteration of my 3 point perspective.

Taking on advice from numerous sources, I decided to slim down some of the panels.

Originally, the idea was to keep them large in imagine a big perspective project like the pyramids of Giza. But I decided to make the panels smaller to make them more life size and realistic to represent the size of the human form.

The most difficult thing to carry out in the value was making everything look cohesive. It was stated that the black hole in the background was too sharp originally, being that it would be behind clouds and an atmosphere. I proceeded to blur this section of the image, which also helped draw your eye more towards the scale of the interior piece.

Overall, I believe there is good value range within the structure.

Digital art practice - week 24

This week, I wanted to go over and redo some parts of my future tribe according to feedback.

In Craig's comments, he mentioned that doors are quite heavy, additionally in order to see the anatomy underneath, I should either change the pose to indicate that the door has weight or remove the door off the character and display it separately.

Furthermore, there were comments made about buckling around the trousers in different areas, thinking about how belts and straps attach
to the body, so thinking about this, I went back to add in some connection points to make it more realistic and readable.

Moreover, on the bionic arm I made, originally, I imagined it to be like the character found metal rods while travelling the post apocalyptic landscape. But in the feedback, the advice was to make this more fleshed out, which I ended up doing.

Digital art practice - week 23

This week, I decided to experiment with 3 point perspective, establishing different sketches and ideas.

I wanted to go with a sci-fi theme, this way, I could implement different hard surface shapes - which would make it completely different from my 2 point piece, which included a lot of organic shapes.

The only problem I had in the sketches I did was a sense of scale. I was advised to break up some of the hard surface by adding extra detail, like panels and cuts within the metal, this would allow me to demonstrate a life size ratio when it came to adding focal points or a subject for size comparison.

Digital art practice - week 22

This week I wanted to carry out my 2-point perspective study.

My initial design was based off a Mayan temple. I however ended up discarding this option ad the amount of detail I would have to put in to the piece would have taken too much time, it would have worked better as a line piece rather than adding value to it. For example, the temple in the background and everything in between had to be filled in with something, such as trees, rocks and other objects.

So I decided to change this design, the general layout and composition stayed relatively the same, but I went for more streamlined shapes. So using the Greek Parthenon and the Roman Pantheon for inspirational reference - I decided to go with the theme of an abandoned Greco-Roman style temple. Taking additional inspiration from Pompeii, it makes for a convincing piece.

There were a few perspective issues, but I fixed these by covering up certain areas with air, grass or something similar, as not to detract from the piece I had already created.
